Wroughton Airfield Solar Park

About the project

The Wroughton Airfield Solar Park is a joint project between Swindon Commercial Services and the Science Museum, on the disused airfield which is currently used for storage by the Museum.

Despite having  overwhelming support from the local community, the government called in the planning application for a public inquiry in early April, on the grounds that it could have a detrimental impact on views from Barbury Castle and the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Watch our film, it shows the site in context.

Please take action

We know that most people in Wroughton and Swindon support renewable energy and would like to see this project go ahead. Please help our campaign and make your views known to the planning inspector and Secretary of State. We understand that letters and emails from members of the public will be accepted until the public inquiry hearing in September.

We have provided some helpful guidance and a pro-forma letter you can use

Benefits of the project

The local benefits of the scheme include enough renewable energy for 12,000 homes, a community benefit fund of £40,000 a year; the chance for local people to invest in a community energy project; and a programme of substantial ecological and biodiversity improvements.

The project will also provide an income to support the Science Museum with its valuable work, and will generate substantially more electricity than the Group uses every year

Public Inquiry details

The public inquiry starts on September 9th 2014 at 10 am, and will sit on various dates until September 18th. The hearing takes place in the Council Chamber at Swindon Borough Council, SN1 2JH, and is open to the public. Comments from members of the public will continue to be accepted until the start of the hearing, so please take action now.
